Pat's family is as grief stricken as little Ben's parents and, while Pat is able to express his grief and accept support, Beth's guilt and sorrow-induced anxiety forces her to withdraw even more than usual, and for a very long time. ![]() She is married to Pat Cappadora, who comes from a tight-knit, loving Italian family. The woman, Beth Kerry, is an emotionally-reserved woman of Irish descent. ![]() A woman who loves her children but is somewhat inattentive, she is thrown into a state of shock and struck dumb by her guilt and devastation when her toddler disappears in the lobby of a hotel. However bleak the outlook may be in such a bad situation, the state of mind of little "Ben's" mother may be even bleaker. This novel by Jacquelyn Mitchard is a wonderfully-told story about a family that endures the worst imaginable crisis-losing a young child.
